Mr. Maher emphasized: "We all wish to thrive on a planet of peace, dignity, equality, and health. I think this is the true beauty of the Expo—not the buildings, but the people."
The theme of Osaka Expo 2025 is "Designing Future Society for Our Lives," with three sub-themes: "Saving Lives, Connecting Lives, Empowering Lives." The UN’s participation will focus on these themes, centering around serving people. As 2025 also marks the 80th anniversary of the UN, the UN Pavilion will unfold in three parts: reflecting on history, engaging with the present, and envisioning the future.
The first part of the pavilion will review the UN's 80-year journey, showcasing historical achievements in global cooperation. The second part illustrates how deeply the UN is integrated into people's daily lives today. Whether it's mobile communications promoted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), postal services by the Universal Postal Union, or vaccination and child welfare efforts by WHO and UNICEF, the UN system has become indispensable.
The third part focuses on the future, themed "Joining Together for a Better Future," exploring what the world might look like if the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are fully realized. The UN Pavilion, with the sub-theme "Collectively Saving, Empowering, and Connecting Lives," will articulate clearly how UN agencies play critical roles in humanitarian work and other fields.
Additionally, during the six-month Expo, the UN has planned an intensive event schedule, collaborating with other national pavilions to advance global issues like sustainable development goals, human rights, peace and security, and equality. The UN will also actively participate in the virtual Expo, enabling global audiences who cannot visit Osaka physically to experience the UN Pavilion online.
Mr. Maher pointed out that the Expo isn't directly a place for solving problems, but a platform for promoting mutual human understanding. Dubai Expo 2020 exemplified this by allowing people to "visit" 190 countries without flying. He expressed that Expo fosters global partnerships, attracting not just tourists but also companies showcasing new products and technologies, thereby enhancing cultural exchange and innovation.
He specifically mentioned that the UN encourages all participating countries to prominently showcase sustainability and concrete actions towards achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. He appreciated the efforts by many national pavilions and suggested visitors engage with pavilion staff, who serve as true ambassadors, presenting their country's unique culture and contributions to the world.
"We all wish to thrive on a planet of peace, dignity, equality, and health," Mr. Maher reiterated. "This is the true beauty of the Expo—not the buildings, but the people."
