On the morning of July 27, marking the 50th anniversary of the passing of renowned Chinese musician Ma Ke, the Ma Ke Art Museum was officially unveiled and opened at the Xuzhou Concert Hall. Themed “Singing for the People,” the museum systematically presents the life, creative achievements, and artistic spirit of the Xuzhou-born people’s musician, becoming another cultural landmark in the city.
Ma Ke’s daughter, Ma Hailing, delivered remarks at the event, and two of his nieces also attended the unveiling ceremony.
The Ma Ke Art Museum has a total floor area of approximately 335 square meters. It features exhibition sections titled “Melodies of His Homeland,” “Songs of Resistance,” and “Singing Across the Loess Plateau.” The museum displays 186 artifacts, 170 historical photographs, and 130 books from its collection. Many of the principal exhibits were donated by Ma Ke’s children free of charge, and most are being displayed publicly for the first time. These include a record player, an erhu, and an old shirt used by Ma Ke, as well as valuable materials such as excerpts from the orchestral score of the film Surging Waves of the Red River and his study notes on On Contradiction.
The museum also uses touchscreens to present 48 volumes of Ma Ke’s diaries, comprising approximately 2.84 million Chinese characters, and has recreated his Beijing study where he composed music. Visitors can select and listen to 54 classic works, including Nanniwan and We Workers Have Strength. Breaking away from conventional exhibition formats, the museum incorporates technologies such as AI-powered digital restoration and augmented historical photo experiences. Five independent video screens continuously play six videos featuring oral recollections from Ma Ke’s children, stage recordings of his representative works, and AI-recreated scenes depicting his life and work in different parts of China. Visitors can also take commemorative photographs against seven digitally composited historical settings, including the Lu Xun Academy of Arts in Yan’an and the China Conservatory of Music, creating an immersive experience that combines viewing historical artifacts, listening to classic songs, and engaging with history.
In the future, the museum will regularly organize appreciation programs featuring revolutionary songs, educational activities introducing Chinese national opera, and study tours for primary and secondary school students. Following the unveiling ceremony, the public cultural performance Singing for the People was held at the Xuzhou Concert Hall. Featuring Ma Ke’s classic works, the performance paid tribute to his lifelong artistic commitment to “singing for the people.”
