Celebrity Media’s on-site interview report from the State University of New York on June 11: At a special event hosted by the Foreign Policy Association, Celebrity Media interviewed international law scholar and former senior U.S. government official Dr. Nicholas Rostow, Foreign Policy Association President and Chief Executive Officer Noel V. Lateef, students, and others.

During the event, Dr. Rostow shared his reflections on the relationship among international law, foreign policy, and national strategy, centered on his newly published book, Proportional to the Mischief: International Law and U.S. Grand Strategy. Dr. Nicholas Rostow stated that there needs to be more dialogue between international law and grand strategy.

Dr. Nicholas Rostow and his wife Nicholas Rostow once served as Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and Legal Adviser to the National Security Council during the administrations of President Reagan and President George H. W. Bush.

Speaking about his professional experience, Dr. Rostow said that he had served in the White House, the Department of State, and the Department of Defense during the Reagan administration and the two Bush administrations, and had long been involved in U.S. foreign policy and national security affairs.

“I served in the White House, the State Department, and the Defense Department during the Reagan administration and the two Bush administrations,” he said. Regarding the origin of his new book, Dr. Rostow said that it grew out of his long-standing concern with the relationship between law and policy. “This book, in a sense, reflects my long-standing interest in the relationship between law and policy,” he said. “In that sense, it fills a gap between the two.”

Dr. Rostow pointed out that although there are many works in academia on strategic studies and international law, there are not many that truly examine the two within the same framework. “There are many books on strategy and many books on international law, but not many works have tried to bring the two together for examination,” he said.

Noel V. Lateef, President and Chief Executive Officer of the century-old Foreign Policy Association

As President and Chief Executive Officer of the Foreign Policy Association, Noel V. Lateef emphasized in an interview with Celebrity Media the importance of international law in maintaining the international order. Noel V. Lateef said firmly, “The United Nations Charter is essential to our international system and to world peace.”

Tyler Collins, a former student of Professor Rostow

Tyler Collins, who studied at Colgate University and was a student of Professor Rostow, also attended the event to support his mentor’s new book launch.

Collins said that she was very excited to hear Professor Rostow’s insights again. “I am very happy to be here today to hear him speak,” Collins said. “It was a wonderful event. We not only learned about his forthcoming new book, but also heard his responses to current issues in international affairs.”

She believes that the day’s discussion helped the public better understand the logic of the international order and the role the United States plays within the framework of international law. “This helps us understand the international framework and how the United States operates in the field of international law,” Collins said.

The event attracted many participants from the fields of international relations and public policy, as well as diplomats. Guests gathered in the art-filled reception hall of the State University of New York, enjoying fine food while engaging in lively and in-depth exchanges. The guests continued their discussions on topics such as international law, global governance, and U.S. grand strategy, exploring from both historical and contemporary perspectives in Rostow’s new book the long-standing and inseparable connection between international law and national strategy.
